Reproductive Rights Must Be Guaranteed

21 August 2012

A Statement by Greg Pason, Socialist Party Candidate for U.S. Senate (NJ)

Yesterday’s statement by Republican US Senate candidate Todd Akin on “legitimate rape” and rejection of the right to abortion in any situation should not come as a surprise to anyone who has followed the rightward drift of the Republican Party and the increased control of the Party by the anti-choice lobby.

The Democrats have responded with outrage, but their rhetoric does not match their actions. Time and time again the Democrats have found ways to allow their own anti-choice lobby to hijack full reproductive rights for women. The most recent example is the inclusion of the“ Hyde Amendment” in the so-called “Affordable Care Act.” President Obama caved to Democratic Rep. By Richard Winger
Ballot Access News

"On August 15, Matt Erard, the Socialist Party’s nominee for U.S. House, 13th district, filed a lawsuit against Michigan’s law on how newly-qualifying parties get on the ballot. Such parties this year need 32,261 signatures, yet older parties only needed 16,083 votes to remain on, for both 2010 and 2012. In Williams v Rhodes, in 1968, the U.S. Supreme Court said states cannot require newly-qualifying parties to show support from more voters than the support that is required for older parties to remain on the ballot. The case is Erard v Michigan Secretary of State, eastern district, U.S. District Court, 2:12-cv-13627...."

Liberty Union Nominates Stewart Alexander for President

14 August 2012

By Richard Winger
Ballot Access News

"On August 12, Liberty Union, a ballot-qualified party that exists only in Vermont, nominated Stewart Alexander for President. He is also the Socialist Party presidential nominee as well.

However, it turns out that the 2009 law that changed independent candidate petition deadlines from September to June also changed the deadlines for qualified minor parties to submit their nominees for the November ballot. Therefore, the Secretary of State will refuse to print the Liberty Union nominees on the November ballot, unless the party wins a lawsuit...."
