New Jersey Socialist Party Will Fight for Ability of Voters to Register “Socialist”

"The New Jersey Socialist Party has voted to file a lawsuit against the state, to obtain the ability of voters to register as members of the Socialist Party. In 2001 the state appeals court ruled that it is unconstitutional to force all voters to register only 'Democratic', 'Republican' or 'independent.' In response, the state started letting voters register into the parties that had filed that lawsuit, but no others. The 2001 lawsuit had been filed by the Constitution, Green, Libertarian, Natural Law, and Reform Parties...."

It sounds like a Russian spy character that Severn Darden would’ve played in the ’60s. Soltysik said exactly what you’d think a socialist would say about right-wing nutjobs throwing around words like socialist. “The two party system and corporate America has such a strong stranglehold over the media that it’s largely Democrats and Republicans who are framing this conversation about socialists and socialism. As more socialists get an opportunity to speak for themselves, then I think we might be able to see the tenor change a little bit. ...."

"The Socialist Party ran two legislative nominees, both in the Indianapolis area. In the 39th House district, the state chair of the Socialist Party, John Strinka, polled 9.77% in a two-person race. The Socialist Party, before 2012, had last had legislative candidates on the ballot in Indiana in 1946, and none of the 1946 candidates polled more than .4%. Also in 2012, Socialist Party nominee Ronald Haldeman polled 3.35% in a two-person race against a Democrat. He probably would have done better, but he was running in a black majority district with a black incumbent, and Haldeman is white...."
