The Socialist Party presidential ticket of Brian Moore and Stewart Alexander gained ballot access in its first state on Monday, 21 January, when campaign volunteers in Vermont submitted more than 1,100 signatures to get Moore in the Liberty Union Party's presidential primary. Moore will be the only candidate competing for the Liberty Union Party's nomination. Since the primary election is binding, this guarantees that he and Alexander will appear as the Liberty Union ticket in the November general election.
The Liberty Union Party is a nonviolent socialist party in Vermont, which shares a number of members with the Socialist Party, and nominated the SP presidential tickets in 1980, 1988, 1996 and 2000.
Although Vermont is the first state where socialist ballot access has been officially confirmed, ballot access efforts are underway in several other states. The Moore/Alexander campaign hopes to gain ballot access in approximately twenty states where barriers are not too steep.
