The Socialist Party presidential ticket of Brian Moore and Stewart Alexander gained ballot access in its first state on Monday, 21 January, when campaign volunteers in Vermont submitted more than 1,100 signatures to get Moore in the Liberty Union Party's presidential primary. Moore will be the only candidate competing for the Liberty Union Party's nomination. Since the primary election is binding, this guarantees that he and Alexander will appear as the Liberty Union ticket in the November general election.
The Liberty Union Party is a nonviolent socialist party in Vermont, which shares a number of members with the Socialist Party, and nominated the SP presidential tickets in 1980, 1988, 1996 and 2000.
Although Vermont is the first state where socialist ballot access has been officially confirmed, ballot access efforts are underway in several other states. The Moore/Alexander campaign hopes to gain ballot access in approximately twenty states where barriers are not too steep. Spring Hill, Florida -- Socialist Party USA Presidential Nominee Brian Moore was threatened with arrest Sunday afternoon by Brattleboro (Vermont) Police officers for petitioning in a supermarket parking lot to qualify on the presidential primary ballot of the Liberty Union Party of Vermont. The primary is scheduled for March 5th.
The manager of Hannaford Supermarkets in Brattleboro repeatedly ordered Moore, in a hostile voice, to leave the large mall parking lot because it was private property and owned by the store. Moore and his three colleagues stood their ground and refused to leave claiming they had a constitutional right to participate in a democratic process in a public area so that he could be a qualified presidential candidate in Vermont...

Moore of Spring Hill, Florida, was nominated for President of the United States at the Socialist Party USA national convention in St. Louis late Saturday afternoon. The 64-year-old Moore, a former independent candidate for the U.S. Senate, defeated longtime party activist and author Eric Chester of Massachusetts, a retired economics professor, on the convention's third ballot to win the party's nomination. A rented truck shot four giant rotating light beams from its chassis to the sky, publicizing a midnight campus visit by Governor Granholm. Giddy Democrats packed the ballroom inside, but outside something was askew. Campaign knick-knacks generally sport some variation of the stars and stripes theme followed by vague promises of a hopeful dawn. But there, drowning in a sea of red white and blue, sat Matt Erard’s campaign sign for the Michigan House of Representatives 53rd District seat. Erard’s Socialist campaign cut costs on their yard-signs - sporting a smaller dimension, black and white print, and neither stars nor stripes - but this one stood out amid the glare of high-beam, two party fanfare..."

The University of Michigan anti-war student organization, Anti-War Action, published a leaflet titled "Voting on the War in Iraq" which lists the positions on the war taken by state and federal candidates who are running in Ann Arbor. The leaflet notes that the Erard campaign calls for immediate unconditional withdrawal of all U.S. occupation forces from Iraq and Afghanistan and that neither of the other candidates for 53rd District State Representative have taken any position on the war...
